Our favourite restaurants in Kendal

The traditional market town of Kendal – ideally located between the Lake District and the national parks of the Yorkshire Dales – is fortunate to have a number of charming cafes, bars and restaurants to choose from. But when it comes to eating out in the evening, we inevitably find ourselves in the same familiar places. Here are our suggestions, along with some photos to give you an idea of the food to expect. I hope you have the chance to visit at least one of our favorite restaurants during your next stay in Kendal.

Corner 124

Our most regular haunt is probably the small but intimate Corner 124. Situated at a crossroads where Windermere Road, Sandes Avenue, Stricklandgate and Maude Street meet, we have been visiting this little gem for 25 years when it was known as Deja Vu. Throughout this period it is always accompanied by excellent Mediterranean cuisine.

We are creatures of habit when visiting, invariably ordering the always delicious chicken and chorizo paella for two, but there are many other wonderful main courses to choose from. Expect everything from “Duck leg confit with orange, ginger, sesame seeds and spring onion served with roasted charlotte potatoes and steamed broccoli” to “Daube de Slow-braised beef with blueberries, honey, garlic, onions and red wine, served with dauphinoise potatoes and steamed green beans, and much more.

We usually opt for a starter and a main course, but the desserts are also good and a great way to try a few at a time is to have their “plate”, a trio of mini versions of desserts that are also on the normal portion menu.

It is recommended to book in advance, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings. You can book online via their website at to or by call during opening hours.

Bangkok 7

Bangkok 7 – or BKK7 – is Kendal’s first Thai restaurant, and you’ll find it on Facebook here.

They serve excellent Thai food and you can choose from a set menu or opt for a la carte. The selection of starters is ideal for sharing and there is a vegetarian option.

And they have a wonderful selection of tasty curries – Massaman, Penang, etc. – and wonderful rice and noodle dishes. Try the Khao Pad Boo (fried jasmine rice with crab meat, egg, carrot and spring onion served with Special Mommy seafood sauce recipe). The presentation and service are also always good.

It’s a little more expensive than the other restaurants suggested here, but it’s definitely worth it for a treat. During the summer months, weather permitting, you can even dine al fresco in front of the restaurant.

There is a space upstairs in the restaurant but advance reservations are always recommended, particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings. You can book online via the Dish Cult website here or by call during opening hours. There are a few reports among Tripadvisor reviews of apparent booking mix-ups. We therefore recommend the first so that you have a reservation confirmed in writing.

Closed on Sundays and closed for the winter holidays from the end of December to the beginning of February.

Trick

If you are unable to secure a reservation at Bangkok 7, a message should also be sent to Thai food in Lakeland which operates a ‘drive-thru’ takeaway collection service in a small industrial area in Kendal. This is not your average takeaway, but Thai street food made to order. Pre-ordering via text or email is recommended and you can view the menu and learn more about how to order at

Kitchen

Comida offers a very relaxed atmosphere, serving tapas style dishes in the heart of Kendal (it is located between Kendal Town Hall and the Brewery Arts Centre).

Choose from delicious dishes like green fig and roasted fennel salad, or beetroot with goat cheese and honey, or Padron peppers simply pan-fried with sea salt.

You can’t go wrong with the Valencian Fried Chicken and Chipotle Mayonnaise, but there are also plenty of vegetarian options such as Paprika Mushrooms, cooked in a creamy paprika sauce, and Roasted Cauliflower and Mojo Verde, all two shown below.

Advance booking is recommended – particularly on weekends and sometimes even weekdays – and can be made via their website at

Trick

The neighboring pub but one (98 Highgate) can be used by diners who cannot be accommodated. This one has a more limited Comida menu, probably due to the difficulties of taking out some dishes across the street from the main restaurant, but it’s nonetheless an option you might consider.
